Israel slams racist comments attributed to ambassador
Agence France-Presse - October 13, 2006
The Israeli foreign ministry on Friday strongly criticised comments attributed to the Jewish state's ambassador to Australia in which Asians were referred to as the "yellow race".
"We are in the process of checking whether ambassador Naftali Tamir actually used these terms," said ministry spokeswoman Ilana Ravid.
"But if that is the case, these are intolerable comments that the foreign ministry condemns unreservedly and will not pass," she added.
Sources at the foreign ministry said Tamir was currently unavailable because he was flying between Israel and Australia.
In an interview published in the liberal Haaretz newspaper on Friday, the ambassador said Israel should cooperate with Australia in order to enhance its position in Asia.
"Israel and Australia are like sisters in Asia. We are in Asia without the characteristics of Asians. We don't have yellow skin and slanted eyes," Tamir was quoted as saying by Haaretz.
"Asia is basically the yellow race. Australia and Israel are not -- we are basically the white race.
"Israel has a past and present in Europe, but no future. Israel is a part of Asia," he was also quoted as saying.
A career diplomat, Tamir is also Israel's non-resident ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Fiji and New Zealand.
