comment on dalawapo's Sig on the 8 Austro..:
although Tagalog has 10.5 million people speaking it, the Visayan language (and it's sub-versions like Cebuano, Bol-anon(Boholano), etc) is spoken more widely than Tagalog. it just happens na Official language siya ng 'pinas.. unless of course the 10.5 million people speaking it uses the pure Tagalog. purong puro.. hehe oh btw, bisaya is spoken in visayas and mindanao and some parts of luzon.

oh cool, well i got that list from a website. I guess they are going by population of the country when they made the list and assume those ppl all speak the national language. I read that Cebuano was a strong contender when the new philippine government was deciding on which language should be the lingua franca for the whole country. From what i read, Tagalog was choosen because it had the longest literature heritage of all languages of the Philippine islands and that was already widely used during the spanish revolution movement and i think i read that Tagalog was not as diversifed in dialect as the Bisaya languages. Are Filipinos today still in discontent about Tagalog being chosen as the National language?

who's that
Forumwalker
Jun 9 2004, 11:16 PM
yeah Tagalog was chosen because it had more written literature compared to Bisaya which is basically a spoken language. i'd have to agree with Tagalog as the major dialect used in creating the Filipino language since Bisaya has too many versions and shortcuts. and besides, it's difficult to spell what you say in Bisaya. it's just like French. hehe

does cebuano have the same type of contructs as tagalog such as gender neutral noun/prounon, can you translate a sentence....
ok can all filiinos who speak a different filipino language translate these sentence in their language:
Maria and Darell ran up the hell.
He ran up the hill.
She ran up the hill.

my dad's dad is from jaro, leyte and my grandma is from somewhere in leyte, but he's pretty much grown up in manila, or around the tagalog region, like rizal and such other places bulacan, quezon,. he don't really talk but he understand it, and therfore he also understand pretty much all other visayan dialect, since they're pretty much similar. my mom was born and raised in manila her mom is ilonggo and something else and her dad is porgee, or portuguese, and ilocos norteno. she don't understand or speak ilocano, but her siblings do, since some are grown in by their grandparents in ilocos, while one of her sister use to speak fluent bicolano, because she spent some time with my grandma's step mother who's from albay or sorsogon. i myself only speak tagalog, fluently but since i moved here when i finally talked in filipino after several years of not spekaing it regularly i found out that speaking it was more harder than i thought. i took four years of j@p too.
