Full Version: How do Indians define who is Indian or not ?

If you come across a person speaking english with an Indian accent, will you consider him "Indian" even though he isn't an ethnic Indian ?

A "friend" was told by a fellow worker(Indian) , "You are trying so hard to hide your Indian accent but I still manage to pick it up". This "friend" is not even ethnic Indian and the funny thing is most of the non-Indians think he has an Australian accent while all Indians know his accent is Indian.

So do Indians here consider this "friend" an Indian ? *This friend is born in India but is not ethnic Indian*

Yup. On his birth certificate, he will always be Indian.

It's up to him what he is imo. A piece of paper says he's Indian, but that may not be what he thinks.

Just like how people don't view non-whites to be Americans, I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't view him to be an Indian either.

I really don't care.

True. However, his english spoken with an Indian accent always gets people attention.
Many people think he is from the West Indies.

The definition of "Indian" is anyone with Indian nationality, regardless of ethnicity (India has no majority ethnic group anyway).

If he doesn't consider himself Indian, then no!
