PS: Have you checked out the link before tengkuafif's post? No one's commented on it yet. : /

I did. The "Indonesian" link given by betong is actually a counter from an Indonesian to the initial message which sent by (apparently) a Malaysian, and the Australian one is written by Grumpy Old Coot. there you go embarassedlaugh.gif
btw where in sarawak r u?

Well, I don't know about the others, but my intention would be in the degrading kind. Why not?Malaysians did not heed our protest not to call us Indon, that attitude itself is degrading. Like what I've said before, why should we respect u if u don't respect us?

^ The motive is because "Malasia" is shorter and easier to pronounce.

Basically, Indonesians want to be called "Indonesians", not "Indons".

Well then, if you find it easier to pronounce "Malaysia" as "Malasia", by all means, I don't really mind.

The same thing for us Malaysians. If you see the structure of contemporary Malaysian Malay words, we shorten a lot of words - Tidak = Tak, Kenapa = Nape, Terima Kasih = Trimas, Apahal = Apsal, etc. So it's not a surprise that we shorten Indonesians to "Indons" too.

Now, now.

You must understand that it's only very recently that this issue has been brought up. Do you think it's easy to change 180 degrees at just the snap of a finger? We've been calling Indonesians "Indons" for a very long time already. And hey, it's not like we mean disrespect to Indonesians. This message from the Indonesian consulate was actually featured on the front page of Borneo Post (a local English daily). If we didn't care, why bother to feature it - more so in the front page? And why should I, a Malaysian, bother to post this topic asking for the opinions of our Indonesian brethrens? icon_confused.gif I might as well ignore it, right?

Change is very gradual, Bhaskara. It takes time. The best we can do now is to at least create awareness among Malaysians. Gradually, we will stop calling you "Indons".

You see, when we call you people "Indons" we do not mean to degrade you. Why, even Malaysian fans of the Indonesian pop culture still call their Indonesian idols "Indons". It's just something that has been ingrained in us, so much so that "Indon" has become a neutral term. To us, Indon = orang Indonesia, nothing more or nothing less than that.

Yea, I know.

In fact, I've stopped using the word 'Indon' altogether after reading that article. embarassedlaugh.gif

Why, thank u, bro! beerchug.gif

I guess Indon is a bit degrading. But so is 'bule'. Even 'belanda' can be perceived as insulting. But then again, westerners don't care because it is rather trivial.
