a video of unarmed Deandre Brunston, 24, getting shot and killed on August 24, 2003. Over 80 bullets blazed at Deandre. Strangely, a police dog was caught in the crossfire. One of LA County Sheriffs scooped the dog and rushed him to the hospital, while a still-living Deandre bled to death. The dog went to the hospital and Deandre stayed as cops walked around him. In the name of justice, Deandre’s mother refused the money they offered her. Google that name for the full scoop...there is much more to it. The 22-minute video of the whole ordeal is on YouTube.

Parolee, Police Dog Killed
The first sheriff's canine to die in the line of duty is accidentally shot as deputies confront man.

By Jose Cardenas, LA Times Staff Writer

Sheriff's deputies responding to a family disturbance call in Willowbrook shot and killed a 24-year-old parolee when he reportedly whirled around with what appeared to be a weapon, authorities said Monday. They also accidentally killed a police dog that was trying to subdue the man when he turned.

Deputies from the Century station were called to a house in the 2400 block of 126th Street just after 9 p.m. Sunday.

But the suspect, Deandre Brunston, had left that house and barricaded himself on the porch of a nearby home, deputies said. He told the deputies that he had a gun and threatened to kill them, authorities said.

Deputy Glenn Emery, 34, released his dog, Marco, a 9-year-old Belgian malinois. The dog was trying to control Brunston when he spun toward them, authorities said.

What they thought was a weapon turned out to be a black sandal with a silver buckle.
Brunston, who also had an outstanding arrest warrant for narcotics, died at the scene.

The dog, shot in the head, was airlifted to a veterinary hospital in Norwalk, where it died. It was the first Sheriff's Department dog killed in the line of duty, authorities said.

Marco and Emery, a 14-year veteran of the department, were one of 12 teams in the department's Canine Services Detail, said Lt. Patrick Maxwell.

They had been together for six years.

agreed. But the cops should atleast act like they serve the law, and the court Rodney King is an @$$hole but he didn't deserve what the police did to him. Their job isn't to determine punishment and carry it out. Their job is to apprehend and deliver the suspect to the court. I would understand 80 rounds being fired if he was actually shooting back at them. Crack head or no the cops should answer for this.

i think 80 rounds is a little OD...and i know cops carry mad heat. all they need is one or two shots...i mean those cops are trained to take out a guy with one shot. i dont know why 80....

Because they suck. Many cops were the school bully. They are used to people cowering before them. I truely believe many of them panic in the face of challenge.

I can't believe they tried to negotiate with him, I thought cops were allowed to use lethal force the second they're threatened with lethal force themselves.

All the bullets came from just a couple bursts from a fully automatic rifle. It's not like ten officers stood around the guy while pumping bullets into him for a full minute.

No They need to be able to justify it. Its not like a Mel Gison movie where they can start blazing away. Ruby ridge brought home a lesson to the ATF about shooting first ask questions later. Although they escaped being held accountable they were put on notice to clean up their acts.
For those who don't know about Ruby Ridge.
The ATF basically set up a guy to cut the barrel on a shot gun shorter than was legal and then sell it to them. Basic entrapment. But the idiot did it. Later the ATF made a raid on his cabin shot his dog, son and a few others. Atf claimed to have Indentified themselves but witnesses say that was untrue. Excessecive use of force... needless to say none of those involved have a career in the ATF worth talking about today.
My point being as law enforcement people they need, should be compelled to be the example to follow.. They should be held to the highest of standards, or it will be the fox guarding the hen house.
