Does anyone here watch the show Top Chef? IF you don't know what it is, its a long-running cooking competition with a new challenge every week. Well in this episode, the challenge involved dividing the group into two teams: Team Vietnam and Team Korea, and prepare a menu to cater for thousands of people and some sort of junket-type event.

Anyways, I thought it was pretty funnny because most of the contestants were white or black and really had no idea what they were doing. They made (sorry can't do accents on this computer) pho and cha gio which was pretty respectable. In the end.....TEAM VIETNAM WON!!!!!!!! (Even though no vietnamese people were actually involved, it still made me happy icon_wink.gif )

But it was really cool seeing how our cuisine is being recognized on a US show, especially such world renown chefs.

Congratulation.

Does that mean whites love Viet food?

Bun bo Hue or Banh Canh is pretty much up to par with Pho on any given day.

asian cuisine is growing in popularity here in the states. asian beer sales have increased at a surprising rate. i think i said it before in a beer thread that died but american beer companies are now singing distribution deals with viet beer makers. cha gia and goi cuon are even showing up on menus in american restuarants.

Their vietnamese eggrolls kept falling apart but I did like Ming Tsai as judge.

I think I can be an effective contributor to any Vietnamese cooking team - My late mother paid particular attention to training me to peel the vegetables, wash the dishes, clean up the kitchen and throw out the trash icon_wink.gif After many, many years of this, I did ask my dear late mother when I would be promoted to cooking, at which point, she just sneered at me. On the other hand, my little sister asked to be taught how to cook, and my mother taught her from day one!

Life is a b!tch, and then you die.

Like a shaolin student, it is imperative that you will go through strenuous training and rigorous ordeal before you can be taught the deadly art of.............cooking? laugh.gif beerchug.gif

Well you know just like chinese, korean food are similar to vietnamese food. But they are not as rich as vietnamese argicultural produce is more . Korea and Japan and Norther China hardly grow rice or tropical fruits and vegetables. So i think Vietnam and Thailand are the two countries would in advantage on this aspect.

I notice the way koreans eat their food is similar to ours. They eat manirated veggies..they have kimchi we have Do Chua.

But Kimchi is spicy. Why? because the live in a colder weather, for the same style, but they eat spicier to heat them up.

They eat alot of Noodle Soup too. They like to make Broth with many ways just how we in different part of the country make different kind of broth.

I feel vietnamese food is more green than chinese or korean because we have more of a vaiety of veggies.

In the South when during the exploration, our ancestors used to say "Whatever veggies eat that dont kill is ok"
So we have many veggies that names i dont even keep up. Such as in the catergory of "Rau Song" that has more than a dozen type of Rau.

Koreans too dont eat too much stirfried like chinese. However i try to say Vienamese cuisin has layers.

for the same idea Eggroll. Its veggies rolled in rice papers for chinese one.
Vietnamese is the same but they add differnet kind of meat in there. The one thing makes eating eggroll more of an experience is that you use lelltuce..Rau Tho*m fish sause..for Eggroll and another sause for Spring Roll. It has layers and more green. The smell of Rau Tho*m and the taste of Fish sauce is what is different from chinese one.

Then every Vietnamese Restaurant has to have the word "PHo* " associated. Everyone including other asians know us for the Pho*. I would say may be we incorporated the western culture Via the French eating Beef in a more sophisphicated way and the noodle soup of the asian way.

BAm...its the experience for both asians and europeans.

Food is good. Im glad something is succesful is related to vietnamese.....Everyone post the clip if whenever we have a chance to have the clip of the show please post.

As I am reading your post half way through, my mouth starts to salivate and my stomach growls. So I think I better quit before I need to clean up my keyboard laugh.gif

On a serious note, I thought Vietnamese got the beef (no pun intended) from Mongolians.

Vietnamese food is my favorite. I'm trying to be completely fair here, but of course being Viet, I am subjected to more Viet food than a non-viet person so I am probably biased in my judgement.

Food is different for everyone, just because someone doesn't like a certain type of food, doesn't mean it isn't good to others.

My top 5 favorite foods would have to be:

1. Viet
2. Korean
3. Mexican
4. Japanese
5. Chinese

I'm gonna see if they show a re-run, I really want to watch this since Viet and Korean are my top 2 favorite cuisines.

Was the Team Vietnam and Team Korea thing a "quickfire" challenge or an "elimination" challenge?

^ it's good that they used the official flag of Vietnam. YAY!!! GO VIETNAM ALL THE WAY

and why do they make such a big deal about Pho, it's not the only dish we have. In Vietnam, Pho is like nothing. we have other types of noodle that are much better in my opinion like bún riêu, bún bò Huế, miến...

Oohhhh, my family's from Hue but last night I tried bun rieu for the first time, and it was REALLY GOOD!!!! Still bun bo hue is forever no. 1 in my heart biggrin.gif. It's true though that pho has become our food stereotype in America but at least so many different people still love it!

laugh.gif sure i cook alot of food hm..out of nessesity when i was like 10 but..let me tell you LVF Mi Quang i got to eat was in HOuston, it was good. Its the Mi` of Quang Provinces to be exact and they are a little different from province to provice...

Its the Mi` that is totally non chinese. specially the broth . They made the broth with either shimp crab and neckbone .

The Noodles are big like chowfun lowmein..but they are yellow. They made the noodle with egg...and pumping are cooked and the juice is extracted and added to the noodle. So the noodle has a very good taste...

The topping is also diffrent..you have one or all of these : shirmp..steam pork pate (gio` da^'y) pork chop..slices of poach chicken..

Veggies are bean sprout..cillantro..basil...slices of banana blossom..and on top are pieces of rice crakers .

The borth is to be not to cover the the noodle. Just about half of a bow level.
You can add sauces like hot sauce but you dont eat spicy then you dont have too. The noodle should have been preseasoned already so its very tasty already..They may marinate the noodle with fishsauce,..soysause and many other stuff.

When you eat you break the pieces of rice crackers and let them be all over the bowl then just it. Its very thick in flavor if you choose to have everything on their..meats and veggies and you never get bored.... laugh.gif sorry i wish i could make a bowl for you instantly..let me try to give you a link to a picture

My Webpage

If it does not work hm.you can goole it with the word Mi Quang under Image...I have tried to make this bowl myself couple times...it turned out ok.. Hey you can try make it too ... biggthumpup.gif

I mean Pumpkin is cooked and extracted to get the juice...Or they just simply mix the noodle with numeric powder (bot nghe^.) kekek sorry typed wrong
