His name is Tim Yap...he had a show on MTV and he writes for the inquierer...just wondering what people really think of him. It is ok if you say you love him or hate him. Also, it would be good to explain why.

The difference between
Louie Cruz and Tim Yap
Posted: 6:59 PM (Manila Time) | Jul. 24, 2003
Inquirer News Service
Attitude and insanity
Attitude and insanity -- that's what the scene of the '70s-'80s had too much of, often to the point of danger. Today's "Tim Yap-pers," in contrast, are long on style and chic, but stop short of scandal (or at least do not make a loud enough noise to make it to the papers).
Scandals were what kept society pages busy and on their toes in the days of Louie Cruz's Giraffe or Louie Y's Stargazer.
Some nights we literally stopped the press to run the latest sampalan in the ladies' powder room, like the time this actress slapped and pulled the hair of an heiress in the Giraffe restroom.
It reached a point where the attendants of the restrooms became regular sources of society column tidbits. And it turned out that some obsessive and enterprising wives and girlfriends would also debrief the attendants to know which woman their husbands/boyfriends brought to the club the night before.
That was when Maurice Arcache's "My Lips Are Sealed" motto was truly valuable to socialites and philandering men who, indeed, had something to hide.
What exactly did the '70s-early '90s have that made it different from today, I asked Louie himself.
"Sensuality and passion. Intensity," he said.
Such down-to-the-core attitude translated into wild abandon. In booze, drugs, affairs. The interesting thing was, in some cases, those party animals then didn't bother to hide all the above, not because they were brazen but because they were candid, if not confident or even smug.
I remember when Louie himself figured in a, uh, scene at the Peninsula lobby, which was talked about for months or even years. The next day, Louie himself went to see the hotel management to report exactly what happened and to apologize, and then called me up so at least we would get our "gossip" accurately.
"I kinda miss such worldly confidence in today's kids," said a party animal who obviously was no longer one of today's kids.
Maybe today's socialistas are confident only about their fashion style, and not much beyond that.
He added, "They descend on the scene, brandish their style and compare fashion brands. I mean, how exciting can you get?"
(Okay, I get the point-comparing Pradas isn't nearly as exciting as comparing adulteries, although the comparative budgets could be close.)
And you can use the word "chic" only so much. In describing today's gigs, you run out of words that are the equivalent of chic. So you go to the music. After that, where?
In the end, however, the people-watching copy doesn't read as juicy as in the Louie Cruz days; it's inevitably limited to who and who wore what, period. That PR-ish. That deep.
This is not to say there's no juice happening behind-the-scenes. Lots.
Perhaps as much as in Louie's days, if not more. For one, cocaine and designer drugs shape the scene, but that's not out in the open. It's still strictly behind-the-scenes, unlike in the '70s and '80s when the party animals paraded their substance use and abuse.
For another, pick-up moves these days are-shall we say-mainstreamed, but not the scandals.
Why the difference? "It's because today's socialistas have day jobs. They're corporate stiffs with jobs and images to protect," our Metro editor Carlo Tadiar told me.
And in Louie's days, I said, following his drift, the party animals were mostly heirs/heiresses or children of cronies who didn't have to work a day in their lives?
Right, he said.
That's a thought. And since it's 3 p.m. and I'm in-between meetings now, and Monchet (Olives, ABS-CBN senior vice president) is expecting my callback to his queries about the phone lines our office needs, I will stop thinking about the Louie Cruzes and Tim Yaps of this world.
