Indonesian Justice Minister Hamid Awaludin says the way may soon be clear for the youngest son of former president Suharto to be released from prison.

Hutomo Mandala Putra, known to all as 'Tommy Suharto', was sentenced to 15 years prison in 2003 for ordering the vengeance killing of a Supreme Court judge who convicted him in a graft case

His sentence was reduced by a six weeks on Tuesday to mark the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

The sentence cut adds to several previous remissions and his jail term being reduced to 10 years on appeal.

Mr Awaludin says the latest remission opens room to grant Tommy Suharto a conditional release because he has already served two thirds of his sentence.

However, the minister says the issue will need to be discussed with the prosecutor's office and the attitude of society will be taken into account.

Indonesian authorities usually reward well-behaved prisoners with sentence remissions of up to six months twice a year, coinciding with Independence Day and religious festivals.
