But so far, I don't think I've seen very much friendliness between the two countries have I? I don't think relations have gotten any worse though, but this year still didn't seem like a friendship year between the two, such as India blocking Chinese companies from investing in its infrastructure and whatnot.

What do you guys think?

I wonder how next year will go as it will be the India-Japan friendship year.
radha_chopra112
Japan is more important, we should be cultivating a friendship there first.

It seems rocky right now, but it might get better later on. Are there any signs of people in India liking Chinese people or using their products? Is there a China Town in India?

There's several Chinatowns in the Indian state of West Bengal, and a Chinatown in the city of Mumbai (Bombay).

I read somewhere listed that there were only 33,000 chinese in India, I know that has to be wrong. I don't know the actual no#, but it has to be higher than that. sure.gif

33,000 doesn't include Tibetan refugees. They are the bulk of the Chinese population in India.

There were 400,000 Chinese in India during 1962. But Hindu Nationalists kicked most of them out. Today no more than 60,000 left in India.

Anyways, let's celebrate India-China friendship year. beerchug.gif

I like chinese people, they make good food. However, when it comes to politics I would prefer Japan. Japan is definitely India's friend and they were great allies during WWII. They are also a reliable and honest race.

I don't think there are more than 3,000-4,000 chinese in India, mostly old people in Kolkatta. At one time they were 200,000 but luckily most of them have left cuz of racism and heavy competition. Don't miss them, but they did have a few good shoemakers.

I think theat you mean Indian nationalist, hindu nationalist would be focusing on kicking other people out first. Also is there an article on the issue? icon_smile.gif

What nationalists?

It's been the policy of Congress since 1947 to deny citizenship to these people, and quite rightly so. I think it's only recently that some of these old people were allowed citizenship, which is ok since their numbers are so few now.

There is no record of any Hindu Nationalists ever having thrown out any Chinese immigrants. Hindu Nationalists generally don't deal with foreigners unless they happen to be Muslim. I hardly doubt there were 400,000 Chinese Muslims in India...... embarassedlaugh.gif

There's even fewer than 60,000 Indians in China though. I remember reading somewhere that there are almost 200,000 Chinese in India, although many of them may be Tibetans. I also think you meant Indian natioanlists, since Hindu nationalists are more concerned about kicking out Muslims and Christians.

So the Tibetans are counted as Chinese by the Indian government? Most of the Tibetans in Exile in India don't consider themselves to be Chinese and are bilingual in Tibetan and Hindi.

Well, India recognizes Tibet as a province of China.....which means Tibetans in India are by default counted as Chinese. However, I think Tibetan refugees have a seperate subdivision to categorize them apart from Han Chinese, since Tibetans are the bulk of the immigrant Chinese population.

I think Tibetans learn Hindi in order to better integrate with their surroundings. The most common language in the state of Himachal Pardesh (where most Tibetans live) is Hindi, so I guess they learn it to communicate with the locals.

The Japanese did try to invade India but were defeated by the Indian Army:

Battle of Imphal
Battle of Kohima
Burma Campaign

Its confusing, some Indians joined the British Army to fight the Japanese, whereas some joined Bose and his army to fight with the Japanese. I heard that the Japanese would have kicked out the British from India and set up a government friendly to Japan. Do you think they would have massacred Indians like they did to the Chinese?

Actually, Hitler and Hirohito planned to extend their empires in order to meet up in India, then the jewel of the British empire. Germany would move through Russia and Iran(which was already an Axis ally), while Japan would come through Burma and South China. This explains the Axis support for Bose's Indian National Army (which recieved training and recruits in Germany and Japan).

The plan to meet up in Delhi failed in the mid 40's because Hitler failed to take Russia and Japan became tied up with the pacific war with the US. icon_sad.gif

Japan had actually taken the Andaman Islands from the British and freed the Indian prisoners held there and setting up a base for Bose and his forces.

Why should their be friendship? They support UFLA and indirectly ISI/militants.
