Well, let's take a look.
Why are the Americans there? They're there to root out terrorists.
If that objective is done, then why should they stay?
What is there to gain?
How much will they lose staying there?
How much effort must be done?
They'll have to give a good reason for staying, pay to maintain the bases, and gain something.
The only thing I can see remotely as a reason the US would stay in Pakistan would maybe be to contain China or for S. Asian hegemony. However, Pakistan is heavily allied with China, so it will take too much effort for the US to convince the Pakistanis to go with the US's plan. Plus, it would just seem too blatantly obvious.
I'm also not too sure if S. Asian hegemony is in the US's agenda either.
The job of rooting our terrorists is never going to be done. As fast as the US army picks them off, the faster new ones spring up. Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda are known to have strong links with terrorist groups operating out of Pakistan, giving the USA strong reason to want to stay there.
Also, the Pakistani government is allied with USA and has been that way since the cold war. They are more than willing to bend over backwards to the USA if it means money in their pockets.....
