How do you feel about the Hmong-American film industry [from dubbing (translating), to films with Hmong-Laos actors/setting, to Hmong-American actors/setting, and even Hmong-American Christian actors]?

Hmong movies suck unless it is dubbed, oh yea some dubbed are hella wack.... when they improve their acting skills, effects and dubbing, then i'll start watching it.. in the mean time *ALL OF YOU YOUNG GENERATION OF HMONG PLEASE HELP THESE OLD FART BOOST UP THE HMONG FILM INDUSTRY*
neena
not just the hmong american film industry...all hmong movie makers aren't the best when it comes to quality and teamwork. choosing the best dialouge and searching for new talents should be improved too.
JandY
Couldn't agree more w/all of these XD... hmong directors might have great ideas, but making it a reality usually ends in failure... no offense... & they're actors + actresses really need to improve in every aspect of good acting XD Nontheless though... they're slowly improving ^^
SofaKingAwesome
i would like to see some hmong films, where can i see them? either dubbed or subbed.
fallenone
the hmong movies are not very well done though i give them props for trying but seriouly need better actors and actress plus better dialog most of the dialog they say are somewhat cheesey most time and wats with the fightin now seems like every hmong movie have to have a pointless kungfu scene
fantasy
they should start improving from bottom to top. that work up to down.

most director are just aiming of money and profit. no heart and desire.

the thing that i cant stand most about hmong movies, espcially the ones that are back in thailand, is the CONSTANT CRYING!!! man, that annoys the heck out of me.

but, ^^^haha, that video was great. ahaha.

Granted many directors work on a TINY budget comparatively, but I agree, better actors/actresses who can not only act but also speak well. That would be first step. Also, I would like to see more movies with more creative plotlines. . .not just LOVE if you know what I mean.

Hmongs R cheapos... they go to Thailand - make crappy @$$ movies, advertise the 'alright' parts of the movies & whatnot (Music Vids etc...) also, they make stupid @$$ "good reviews" about their $hitty movies... U know how like they say, "Its a must watch, it will make U cry Fellow Hmong ppl!"... & then... they pay the people who act for them like nothing... its fu-ked up.. then they mass produce their $hit & Hmong ppl (believing that they should support their fellow Hmong in making these no good vids.) & the ppl who make 'em end up with a reasonable profit & grin with their pockets fuller than what they began... likewise too XD
lilasiankid
The only people that buy Hmong movies are OG's...and the Hmong movies are targeted towards OG's anyways.....made by OG's mostly....

I'm sure something will come out with the younger generation into filmmaking....

you obviously dont know anything about the film industry. it costs ALOT of money to make a film. they dont pay their actors a high amount of money because they cant. sure, they make some money from selling the movies but you know how much of that money is gonna go back into the movie? they'll need to pay for production, the loans they took out. making a movie is not cheap. remember, this is the hmong industry, not hollywood. dont expect big paychecks if you want to act for the hmong industry.

YEAH^^Thats true...not only do hmong ppl not make a lot of $$ with their movies they also don't know how to advertise it. in one advertisement they tell you the whole freakin' story...

I think the Hmong-American Film industry is progressing VERY well...

We've had some pretty high quality movies come out recently (like Tou and Mai). And also a few ground breaking ones (like The Frong and The Tiger - Animated Movie).

Of course the target market is the Hmong community, so profits are going to be limited because of lower demands (compared to Hollywood films).

Keep up the good work Hmong-American entertainers! biggthumpup.gif

anyone got any imdb links to hmong movies?

Hmong film makers should study the films of the last century, specifically the early 40s, they should study such films made by Kurosawa’s such like seven samurai, redbeard etc, film making is a passion, someone who is really passionate about film makes a good film that leaves an impression on others, some films changes the way we view life, some changes our ethics our morals and this is what films should be about, if you take a 50,000 loan on a movie and make back 25,000, was your film worth making?? Yes it could be worth it just as long as you believe it was really good, not just to you but to others who really know what a good movie is...Hmong films don’t have that kind of magic, or do they?

I would like to see the Hmong Film Industry to expand and go beyond their creative minds to construct a film that will amaze and fascinate the hmong people, especially the older hmong people. Whoever these people are, please come up with new story lines, not 'romeo and juliet' lovey dovey movies and not orphans who don't get anything to eat, but has to stay overnight and watch the gardens. These story lines are too played out, we need something new, something that will touch our hearts, something that will thrill us and something that will fascinate us, especially if they are our hmong people who are the actors/actresses. At least come up with a story like (for example) a boy runs away from home because of all his problems and then he comes upon a strange looking town and meets an unusual girl, who share the same depression as him, and although they are two different strangers they are compatible at heart..etc. Just a quick thought. Thanks people!

Having been in the Hmong movie industry as well as in the Hollywood industry, there are a lot of different factors that are involved with why the Hmong film industry cannot go up.

1) Illegal duplication of BOTH dubbed movies (Korean, Thai, Japanese, Chinese movies) and Hmong movies is flooding the market. People would rather buy those movies rather than the Hmong ones because visually, the production value is MUCH higher. This prohibits Hmong filmmakers from spending too much on their films because they will go into MAJOR debt if they do. STOP BUYING ILLEGAL MOVIES!!! and STOP PUTTING MOVIES ONLINE!!!

2) EDUCATION: These OG filmmakers have no education in filmmaking. There are a few NEW filmmakers emerging that I see have a lot of promise. People like Moua Lee, Kang Vang, Kak Lee, Mong Vang, Lue Lee... Didn't mean to write it in that order of last names. These cats are educated and have a really good sense of where to lead the industry.

Some films you guys should check out are:
1) Kuv Leej Niam - Moua Lee
2) Tou and Mai - Kang Vang

These have good production value, and are actually quite good in all aspects of filmmaking.

My opinion: Hmong movies still have a long way to go. They need to be more original and stop biting off of other cultures. I think that I like some of the Immer sad orphan movies and documentaries way more because it doesn't get on my nerves as much. As for the ones that are improving, good jo. Keep doing what you are doing, which is different from the typical hmong movies. and PS . Dubbing foreign movies should not count as a hmong movie.

They're incompetent, almost every movie they make are usually always rushed out for sale. They don't really care about the quality of their work at all. It's like they don't have any kind of standardization in place to restrict them from producing corny and garage like films.

As for the translation and dubbing industry, I think they are doing a great job. Thou, I hardly see any movie with text subbing, wish they could have made more features available on their medias.

I should say that Hmong Filmmaker/Director Moua Ly is a close friend of mine. To tell you the truth, there is still quite a way to go for Hmong movies, but we're getting very quickly. Help promote fellow Hmong filmmakers and their movies by adding Hmong movie titles to our site so everyone can know about them. Go to HMONGFILMS.COM and explore. We're barely starting, so it's not much yet, but will be eventually.

first of all, to keep things short (b/c i hate hella long posts), ppl need to be EDUCATED and NATURALLY TALENTED.

second, we need to do a world-wide cast-search for better looking people b/c a movie with crusty-lookin Hmong ppl just totally ruins the entire film. and of all those ppl, there's bound to be a couple who are darn good. Hmong ppl are just mad lazy and incooperative and freakin competitive... and that has caused us to be the lowest of all ethnic groups. dumb a$$es.

the Hmong film industry is very slowly improving, but another important factor is the score. we need composers who DON'T depend on a freakin keyboard, who can actualy compose and play real instruments besides a freakin guitar or piano. ppl need to stop taking music outside and putting in their pathetic films. it's like "hey! isn't that 'From This Moment" by Shania Twain, but a crappy midi version?"
PB.
I really like that movie about opium on HmongFilm.com website

Omg! World wide cast-search for better looking people? Unfortunately, such small movie makers don't have the kind of resource to do that. I don't see anything wrong with the actors. Actors are people too, no-one is perfect. No matter how good looking the actors are, the movie is already ruined in the first place as the story was poorly planned. They usually don't do any research on people, time-lime (history), and costume-wise. As a result the actors, costumes, scenes, and the story itself are out of place... Lack of realism...

I do agree with you on audio acoustics instrumentation being used on their movies are so lame as they can produce their own...

Hmong Dubbing has improved throughout the years. The qualities and voices are getting better every movie. Hmong folks should continue to dubb, but I dislike how they cut many scenes of the movie, it kind of keeps you hanging and wonders what happen, but if it's neccessary, then I'm fine with it.

Hmong American Movies have also improved with goold qualities and acting BUT the storyline sucks big time. I haven't seen a movie done in the state that has caught my attention and taken breath away. 2 or 3 are good but it's not that great!

Hmong movies overseas are improving as well, I noticed that many are becoming widescreen with good qualities in it. The movies overseas are actually improving than movies in the states...hehe! I don't want to say that but it's true. But there are a few that I hate. For ex. movies that are useless and a waste of time to produce...no titles mention but yes you know it's true... ( :

they should stop dubbing, period. why, because they're breaking the law, j/k.

seriously, umm...dubbing? i can care less for their dubs what i want to talk about is their movies. now i haven't be up to par on the lastest flims so i'm really gonna get it if i'm wrong here but, i think they actually need to go to school and learn how to tell a story. most of the movies i've seen looks like some one took their moms cam corder and started shooting. more professional work needs to be done that includes scripts, music, sound effects, better talent for actors, new plots, typefaces, and most importantly sub themes.

i know and understand that budget is and will always be a key figure so we don't need to beat the producers for making a cheesy movie. i'm not expecting CGI's, great movies don't derive some computers and animators but some special effects like rain, smoke and fog might, lighting will help.

i think most importantly we have to understand and study film making to be able to create a good film. most of those hmong directors are regular joes and just points and shoots neglecting lighting, focol points, consistency, etc..

my last hmong movie i saw was the remake of zeb thiab suab love after death or something like that. sometimes directors are so busy trying to shoot the scene they forget about the technicalities involve. in zeb the suab when the heroine comes back to her house after her guy colleague drops her off home. she goes into the kitchen and gets a cup of coffee, problem is that she pours it into a glass cup. wth? who pours hot coffee into a glass cup? she must have tough skin not to get burn. see but just little technicalities like that cup thing should have been notice and re-shot.

hmong directors need to surround themselves with people who understands filming and all the works that invovles it before attempting to make another disaster.

i don't want to sound shallow but yea, better looking actors would be easier on the eyes.
and i agree with you ib puas percent on the score. Directors and producers need to understand how important sound and music is. It needs to be incorperated seamlessly without the audience being aware of it. music is a vital role with story telling, creating an original score (since you said it best) "we need composers who DON'T depend on a freakin keyboard, who can actualy compose and play real instruments besides a freakin guitar or piano".
