Yes, all cars have good handling. But still long way to go for Proton if want compete with Toyota, Honda and European/USA made car. But Proton have their own design. Not the best looking in the world but surely not the ugliest. But Proton have a good start in making its own car. Of course Proton need to start somewhere if want to be the best in bussiness. Maybe Proton can start in Malaysia. Give the best car to Malaysian. Bravo Proton.

There is a a car company here that sells Proton,it's in front of our exam hall in Adelaide so on our way there we'll see Proton Savvys and Proton Gen.2.

I got to admit the Savvy and Gen.2 designs looks kinda fresh and appealing compared to Holden and Mitsubishi designs.

swingdoctor,is there alot of Protons in Melbourne? I once saw a Gen.2 there... biggrin.gif

As for Adelaide,I see alot of Jumbucks around. Since SA is largely agricultural, the Jumbucks is a reasonabe choice for farmers as it has smaller engine and uses less fuel.I dare I say I am seeing Jumbucks more than Korean brands.

I have also stumbled upon 2 Gen.2s some time ago and yesterday we saw a blue Savvy!!! First Savvy seen on Adelaide road biggthumpup.gif ,should have taken a picture.

I hope Proton does well with its Satria Neo which have just been launched in Sydney.I also stumble upon quite a number of Satria GTi now and then and there's currently a Satria Gti outside our residential building,it belongs to a staff here biggthumpup.gif.

No there haven't been. Unfortunately the cars for a variety of reasons didn't sell well and most of the proton dealerships handed back their licenses but, at the last Melb Car Show the Savvy did reasonably well and had a pretty good write up from the car magazines. It was predicted that this would be the start of protons comeback but, still haven't seen many on the road.

You see a few Gen 2 and Satrias Gti's around. From what I understand, compared to its rivals, the Gen 2 didn't compare well but, the Satria was quite reasonable and it did apeal to a certain section of the market.

VW drops push for control in Proton talks

Analysts attribute shift to its need for quick access to M'sian car market

Business Times

Volkswagen AG (VW) is believed to have dropped its insistence on taking a controlling stake in Proton so that it can quickly seal a deal with the national carmaker to gain a toe-hold in South-east Asia's booming car market, said a source close to the German carmaker.

The withdrawal of this 'controlling stake' insistence, which had become a sore point in their negotiations in the past, means that both VW and Proton will be hammering out a revised deal.

This turn of events comes amidst pressures at VW, Europe's largest carmaker, which is faced with a board room tussle, slumping sales in key markets and the likelihood of more red ink from its global operations in 2006.

According to a source from VW Asia, its most recent round of negotiations with Proton Holdings Bhd in Bangkok 'went smoothly' with both parties discussing and agreeing to some of the details of the revised partnership.

An analyst monitoring the local car industry said the new development spells good news for the Malaysian national carmaker.

He believed that VW's shift in posturing and to go ahead with a partnership with Proton is due to the 'eroded position' of the European carmaker from its heyday of a few years ago. 'VW is faced with little choice now. It has a strong presence in most major markets except in the booming South-east Asian region, where its models and distribution network is weak. Its tie-up with Proton quickly solves the problem of having the right models manufactured here for this region,' the analyst said.

VW has been facing three years of declining profits and finds its finances once again under pressure as profits in Europe are expected to crumble next year, with losses mounting in the US, China and Latin America.

Morgan Stanley, in its recent report, said that in North America, VW lost US$1.1 billion in 2004 and will lose a bit more in 2005 as the Passat, Jetta and Touareg models had failed to excite US buyers. In 2006, red ink will still be about US$895 million.

In China, VW faces shrinking market share and Morgan Stanley expects the carmaker to lose US$118 million in 2005 and this is expected to double in 2006.

SEAT, the Spanish-based VW brand, is expected to lose US$118 million in 2005, twice as much in 2006, and US$590 million by 2008.

Meanwhile, Mayban Securities said that Proton's sale this week of its 57.8 per cent stake in troubled Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta for just one euro might be a prelude to a tie-up with VW.

The turnaround in Proton's talks with VW and other potential car making partners seems to point to Proton's new management recapturing the driving seat for 2006.

The new management at Proton has been instituting changes starting from the third quarter of this year when it embarked on more aggressive sales strategies.

Besides VW, it is believed that Proton will also explore a multi-party strategy that includes forging partnerships with General Motors, the world's largest carmaker, and Mitsubishi of Japan for its Asian play, say market watchers.

With its reported export push to China over the long term, sources also say that Proton is likely to take on a separate carmaker as its partner specific to the Chinese market.

Proton is understood to have initiated talks with two Chinese carmakers, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp which last year bought Korea's Ssangyong and owner of the Cherry brand, along with Geely Automobile Holding Ltd, China's largest private carmaker.

There are more details on Group Lotus’ plan to turnaround the company within the next 5 years. Previous details on the plan revealed plans to produce more of it’s own cars, re-engineer third party cars, as well as expand it’s engineering consultancy business. More details about those details at this post.

Further details reveal that the flagship Lotus Esprit will be postponed to a end 2009, making it a 2010 model. Lotus says it needs more time to “insert more Lotus DNA” to ensure global competitiveness. Rumours previously had it that Lotus was to release the Esprit next year. The new Lotus Esprit is expected to be a mid-engine, rear wheel dirve layout and could use a 4.8 liter V8 DOHC unit from BMW, making more than 400 horsepower, which would be a real rocket combined with the Lotus philosophy of performance through weight reduction.

In the meanwhile, Lotus announced it will introduce a new mid-market level model in May 2008, as well as a new 4-seater high-performance model in collaboration with Proton - are we going to see a Proton car being tuned up in the style of the Lotus Carlton? Bernama reports that this model will be based on the Proton Satria Neo. The Lotus line-up currently includes the Elise, the Exige and the Europa.

As part of it’s efforts to cut costs, Group Lotus also announced 200 job cuts in it’s manufacturing workforce. The Hethel plant workforce suffers because of the US market slowdown, which is the company’s biggest market. Rather than calling it downsizing, officials have said it is more of a “right-sizing.”

There are some rumours of Proton selling off Lotus like what it did to MV Agusta, but Proton’s MD Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir was quick to clarify that there are no such plans, not now and not in the future. He was quoted to say “We will make sure that Lotus will work. We must ensure Lotus is a success; there is no other way.”

The Edge Weekly reports that the latest company to express interest in buying Proton shares is the Mofaz Group, a company that sells imported cars in Malaysia.

In other news, investors are still skeptical about Proton’s ability to turn around. HLG Research maintains it’s sell position on Proton shares, saying it needs foreign participation to compete globally.

Nevertheless, Proton sales in foreign markets such as UK have been slowly but surely improving, with sales in September 2006 for the Uk market doubling despite car registrations dropping by 3.5%. The Proton Satria Neo will be launched in the UK market early next year.

Proton will produce Porsche car in Malaysia........

If Volkswagen buy stakes in Proton, and Porshe buy stake in Volkwagen, soon we will see be most "state of art" car factory in Malaysia will produce Porsche car for SEAs region...
Why not??????

QUOTE

Porsche raises Volkswagen stake

Porsche does not see itself as a backseat driver in terms of VW
Porsche has increased its stake in Volkswagen to 27.4% and suggested that it could soon raise it further.
Porsche bought a 21.2% investment in VW last year, saying the move would help to protect it and VW's independence.

It may soon raise the equity stake to 29.9%, just below the threshold where it must make a formal takeover bid.

But Porsche's influence is limited by laws preventing anyone other than Lower Saxony's regional government holding 20% of VW's voting rights.

Question of independence

Under a 50-year old law - known as the VW law - some VW shares carry more voting rights than others.

The measure effectively gives Lower Saxony a veto over key decisions affecting VW, something Porsche opposes.

Lower Saxony premier Christian Wuff is a strong supporter of the VW law, saying that it protects the firm's plants in the state.

But it is being challenged by the European Commission which says the measure is anti-competitive, a stance which Porsche has backed.

VW's future is a matter of great political interest

Should the European Court of Justice decide to overturn the law in a decision expected next month, this would pave the way for Porsche to exert greater influence over future decision-making.

It could also leave VW open to possible takeover although Porsche says it has no interest in buying VW, Europe's largest car producer, and wants the two firms to remain independent.

Porsche's board has given its management the authority to raise its VW equity stake to 29.9% although it is not clear when this will happen.

Separately, Porsche has extended the contract of its chief executive Dr Wendelin Wiedeking for a further five years.

The move came on the same day that Porsche revealed a 70% rise in annual profits.

Porsche as far as I understand in manufactured only in Germany. It is a super premium luxury sports car.

I think Proton has come a long way since its inception but it still is struggling to bulid a decent budget car that is globally competitive, let alone a super premium sports car.

Furthermore it would not be VW owning Porsche, Porsche would own a non controlling stake in VW.

If (and this is still a big if) the deal goes through between VW and Proton, then I think Porsche would first want to see how a Beetle is manufactured in Malaysia before allowing one of their premium cars moved overseas.

Proton Revving Up For Expansion In Melbourne

By Neville D' Cruz

MELBOURNE, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Proton has announced a major expansion of its Melbourne dealer network opening three new dealerships across the metropolitan area marking a 150 percent increase in the company's outlets in the Victorian state capital.

The new dealerships, in the Melbourne CBD, at Hoppers Crossing in the West and Lilydale in the East will feature full sales service and parts.

The three new dealers join Proton's established outlets at Coburg and Dandenong while several more new dealers are being assessed with a number of other outlets expected to be announced early next year.

Proton Cars Australia's managing director John Startari said the expansion of the dealer network in Melbourne was part of the company's plan to increase its representation as new models came on stream.

"Proton has actively recruited high calibre dealers who have a desire to help build the marque and be a part of its growth and enormous potential," Startari said.

"With fuel prices and global warming continuing to be a concern for many motorists our range of economical small cars has resulted in a lot of approaches from dealers keen to take on the franchise and it would have been easy to rapidly expand, however we have deliberately been very selective," he said.

"Melbourne is a key market particularly on the outer fringes where commuters have high mortgages and long distances to travel so there is a demand for economical, well featured cars that will allow them to commute in comfort at a low cost."

Startari said next February Proton would launch the new Satria three-door hatch joining the Savvy city car, Gen 2 five door hatch and the Jumbuck half tonne ute, giving Proton the best spread of models the company had ever had in Australia.

"Along with new dealers in Melbourne a number of new outlets in Sydney will be announced shortly giving Proton its best representation since the marque was established in Australia in 1996," he added.

The new Melbourne dealers are Werribee Proton in Hoppers Crossing, Yarra Valley Proton in Lilydale and Melbourne City Proton in Spencer St, City.

Proton Cars Australia was established in 1996 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the parent company in Malaysia, delivering full parts and service back up to the more than [b]20,000 Proton[b] eek.gif owners in Australia.

Volkswagen to cease production of Golf model in Brussels

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volkswagen, Europe's biggest car maker, has said that it would no longer build its best-selling Golf model at its Brussels factory in a move which unions say could see 3,500-4,000 jobs axed at the plant.
VW said in a statement on Tuesday that it would manufacture the Golf at only two European sites in future, at the group's home plant in Wolfsburg and at its Mosel factory in Saxony.
"Despite increased market share, our western European plants are not operating at full capacity."

There was also little room for boosting export sales as a result of the strong euro and custom regulations in growth markets such as Russia, India and China, VW complained.

The auto giant did not specify how many jobs might be axed at its Forest plant in Brussels, but union officials there estimated that 3,500-4,000 jobs could be on the line out of a total workforce of 5,400.

VW simply said that talks were underway with employee representatives at the Brussels site.

"All economic alternatives are being explored with a view to securing as many jobs as possible in Brussels," the car maker promised.

Close to 193,000 Golf cars are expected to have been built in Brussels this year and 11,000 Polo cars.

VW has recently embarked on a massive restructuring of its German factories, with 20,000 jobs to be cut there over the next three years.

"Following these cuts in Germany, other manufacturing sites must now be restructured in order to make production and capacity utilisation of all VW plants in Europe competitive", VW said.

German Chamber sees VW as best fit for Proton

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) is confident that Volkswagen AG's (VW) bid for a strategic partnership with national carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd is the most competitive.

The MGCC and the German government were both in favour of the deal, MGCC president and chief executive officer Dr Rainer Herret yesterday told a press conference in conjunction with the start of a 14-member German trade delegation visit to Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

MGCC was disappointed that the discussions between VW and Proton halted last year without conclusion, Herret said.

Among the factors in favour of VW, was the fact that it had already spent three years preparing for such a partnership and “could begin production within days,” of an agreement, said counsellor for economic and commercial affairs at the German Embassy to Malaysia, Wolfgang Trautwein.

The German Embassy was in contact with VW and monitoring the negotiations between the parties, Trautwein said.

In the event of a deal, Proton would benefit from access to better technology, training and worldwide distribution network of VW, while the German automaker would have access to Proton's Tanjung Malim factory, allowing it to save substantially from setting up its own production facilities in the region, he said.

Earlier discussions halted due to confusion that VW wanted a controlling stake in Proton.

In fact, VW's bid involved the creation of a joint venture company (JVC) in which VW wanted a controlling stake “to protect its intellectual property,” Herret said.

The JVC would engage in joint development of vehicles, while Proton could continue to produce and market cars independently, or in some other arrangement.

The trade delegation, which arrived on Sunday, comprises mostly makers of equipment for textile production, targeting Malaysian textile companies upgrading to manufacturing high-tech fabrics.

It also includes biodiesel player Hans Lehnard Produktions- und Vertriebs GmbH.

The trade delegation has started a series of meetings, which end tomorrow, with potential Malaysian business partners.

Germany is Malaysia's ninth largest trading partner with total trade valued at 7bil Euros for the first 11 months of 2006 and 6.92bil Euros in 2005.
