What would need to happen for a subcontinent reunion? Peace treaty, unity in economic growth or war etc.....

I'm sure there are alot of people that feel the same way we do. I think as India develops and we have something to offer our neighbors, it becomes a greater possibility. And if India develops into superpower, economic unity is even more viable. I think it's possible in the not to distant future.

But, that's not going to happen anytime soon. Hell, we Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans can't even live in peace when we're living abraod. If South Asians can't even unite living as minorities, what makes you think they can happily unite back home?

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. Still I think the governments hold longer grudges than the people do. Places like RateDesi are examples of South Asians getting together in a generally peaceful tone, I think. There are other organizations that promote South Asian unity. I still think more could be done.

RD maybe okay now, but there used to be a lot of ethnic tension back then. Actually, you still do see home Hindu Vs. Muslim stuff every now and then.

Most ordinary 2nd-3rd generation British Asians (except for a few gangs here and there) have united quite well. We just refer to ourselves as Asians, instead of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, etc. (or sometimes refer to our ethnicity instead)

South Asian Americans are more intergrated into American mainstream society. There are Asian associations that include Indians and not just East Asians.

Sometimes it seems like they're united on the outside and will call themselves "Desis", but there are times where people's prejudices and separatist attitudes shine through when they make random comments.

I can tell over here that Hindus/Muslims and Pakistanis/Indians in my town don't like getting too close to each other. They will be polite to each other only when needed and there isn't any fights that break out between them.

But, they don't like each other behind closed doors.

Well Hindu is Asian to the max so it can be a problem.

I don't have anything against Muslims. Nor do I have any issue the ethnic groups that inhabit Pakistan. I just think there are two countries that can't get along. It's like if Kareena and Bipasha and had to do movies with each other for the rest of their life.

I can't believe anybody can be this dumb to ask this kind of question. why do punjabis think they are the only people in india.. ask a marathi,bengali or a south indian none of us have any kind of longing for pakistan or bangaldesh. it's hard enough for us to get along with everyone else in our country and u want to add more troubles.. u have heard of kashmir have you!!! first we cannot get along well with the muslim brethen in india u have to add extra god how many million to an already volatile mix. pakistanis hate indians yes yes they will be sweet and friendly and inside they don't like us and neither do we!!! we have fought 3 wars with them. peace we want !!! but not country re unification...

They actually had four Indo-Pak wars. But why would you think it's okay to hate an entire group of people just because of past enmity? It's almost been a decade since the last war between them. Why can't Indians and Pakis just get over it already?

And since when did Punjabis Indians have a longing for Pakistan? Some Punjabi Indians seem to think of Punjabi Pakistanis as a different ethnic group altogether, and vice versa.

Agreed. Religion was brought into politics, at a time when the country needed to be united. There was an especially bright future for the country just before the split. However, I think greed and desire made people use religion as an excuse to get what they wanted.

iam not saying that we need to hate. i said we want peace and but not country reunification. first of all hardly any one of u people live in india or are even aware of the ground relialities of india and pakistan. yes it was wrong to divide a country on basis of religion but it was right thing to do.hindus wanted to rule for the first time earlier it used to be mughals then british. if bangladesh and pakistan were still with us there would be more muslims and the what it would have been islamic republic of india!!!. muslims convert they marry non-muslim men and women and convert them... the amt of freedom that women get in india compare that to pakistan. just 2 weeks ago a woman minister was shot dead by a man cause he felt she was going against the religion. just for being a minister in parliarment she was killed. why don't people get it india is now a different country and so is pakistan...

Part of the reason why Punjabis may want reunification is because it was their state (along with Bengal) which were divided. All the other Indian states (except maybe Kashmir) remained intact and either went all the way to India or all the way to Pakistan.

I know that personally I would love is Lahore was still part of India. That's where my mother's family was from and they owned quite a bit of property there....
