Ugly’ bride derails wed plans

A Massachusetts man whose family traveled all the way to India to check out a possible bride for his son is suing the woman’s relatives because she was too ugly and unpolished for his baby boy.

In his lawsuit, Dr. Vijai Pandey of Belchertown claims his wife, son and daughter were “shocked” to discover the Indian woman was “ugly with dark complexion and protruded bad teeth and couldn’t speak English to carry on conversation.”

Pandey then called off the arranged marriage, according to the lawsuit posted on the Web site thesmokinggun.com

“I felt cheated, really, and there was no remorse from the other side, like it was our mistake,” Pandey told the Herald yesterday. “I felt taken advantage of.”

The Pandey family were good friends with a couple from Maryland, Lallan and Kanti Giri, who suggested that Pandey’s 37-year-old son, Pranjul Kumar Pandey, propose to their niece, Savita Giri, according to the lawsuit. Savita Giri lives in India.

The Giris said it would be a “great family favor” because Savita’s father had died and her family was struggling, the lawsuit said.

Pandey pointed out that his youngest son was “extremely handsome” had a “fair complexion” and spoke English. Pandey said in the lawsuit that he was assurred compensation if Savita wasn’t “beautiful and suitable,” the lawsuit claims.

Pandey made numerous calls to the woman’s mother and sent her money for Savita’s passport and other expenses, the suit claims.

In the lawsuit, Pandey claims the Giris sent him a picture of Savita but he “couldn’t tell much about Savita’s complexion and beauty from it.”

Pandey said the Giris “reassured that Savita was beautiful and suitable and they take full responsibility.”

In August 2003, Pandey’s youngest son, Pranjul Pandey, his mother and sister traveled to New Delhi, India, to meet Savita. After they described her appearance to Pandey, he told his wife to “politely tell Savita’s mother that marriage was off.”

Pandey is suing for $200,000 to cover travel expenses, other expenses and emotional distress.

Maryland attorney Matthew Hertz, speaking for the Giris, said the family simply made the introductions and sent a picture. “It was no more than, ‘Hey, I know someone,” said Hertz, who said no money was exchanged.

Pandey had told the Giris he needed to marry off his youngest son, and they mentioned Savita, Hertz said. Hertz said a picture was sent and that “was the end of Mr. Giri.”

The Giris did not return a message left at their home yesterday

How heartless. Why would you sue a struggling family when the father passed away?

It's a conspiracy theory, huh? They just want to find a way to make a WOMAN suffer. The guy sueing the family must be some misogynist weirdo.

It is very stupid, and quite embarrased even though i have nothing to do with it! I so hope its a lie, but i think i read in Times of India or Hindustan Times.

WoW is this for real ? What a loser family. How must the son look like, if he's 37 and still unmarried ? He must be really UGLY himself. Hmmm who knows, maybe he's gay...

I just kinda feel sorry for Savita. Also wtf is with the fair complextion and dark complextion argument? Guy deserves beats just for that.
Astromantic
They should get sued by the Indian government instead.

The dude should bhave gotten photos or video --- anything. Prior to going along with this.

If ya think about it, if the guy was such a 'catch' he wud get married on his own. Why is mommy and daddy fixing him up?

Some Indian American families still prefer arranged marriage. I know since my parents want me to have one, after graduation. bawling.gif But it's a minority compared to UK Indians. embarassedlaugh.gif

This is even worse than fat people trying to sue McDonalds for making them fat. The Pandeys could have just asked for pictures but instead they travelled all the way to India. They need to take responsibility for their own actions rather than trying to point the finger at the other family. They'll probably just end up losing even more money by going through with this pointless lawsuit and losing the case.

That's right, probably half the British Asian population have arranged marriages.
