Vietnam-made green motorbikes could hit European roads soon

A French company has signed an agreement with the Vietnamese inventor of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) motorbike conversion kit to popularize the product in Europe.
The hybrid fuel carburetor which enables motorbikes to run on both gas and petroleum was invented by a research team from the University of Danang Central City headed by its rector Professor Bui Van Ga.

Under the agreement between Ga and Espace Loisir, the French company would launch an advertising campaign in 17 European countries in 2007, along with exhibitions showcasing the gas-fueled motorbike in France and Italy.

Michel Lefebvre, manager of Espace Loisir, said negotiations were on over technology transfer and costs, and that the product would be labeled in Vietnamese.

He said the device could help relieve Europe’s concerns over environmental pollution and energy deficiency because LPG motorbikes saved up to 40 percent of cost and reduced environmental pollution by 30 percent compared to their gasoline counterparts.

Companies from Australia, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, and Africa have already signed deals to buy the product from Ga.

The first 25 motorbikes using LPG were delivered to customers in Danang in August.

Last month the team had announced a project to make three-wheeled vehicles to collect garbage, also run by LPG.

The Danang Urban Environment company said the new initiative would help improve garbage collection, especially in alleys, and some 100 of them would be deployed by next year.
