India test-fires nuclear-capable missile

BHUBANESHWAR, India - India successfully test-fired a medium-range nuclear-capable missile on Sunday, days after its rival Pakistan launched a similar missile.

The Prithvi missile was fired into the Bay of Bengal from the test range in Chandipur in the eastern state of Orissa, the official said on condition of anonymity as he is not allowed to reveal his identity under ministry rules. The test comes three days after rival Pakistan carried out a similar test of its nuclear-capable Ghauri missile, also known as the Hatf 5.

The competing missile tests came after the countries concluded a crucial round of peace talks in New Delhi aimed at resolving their differences, including the thorny issue of their territorial dispute over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.

Peace talks often come under criticism from hard-liners in both India and Pakistan, which have fought three wars — two of them over Kashmir_ since independence from Britain in 1947.

Sunday's test was "routine" and "part of the country's air defense exercises," Press Trust of India news agency quoted an unnamed official as saying.

India routinely test-fires missiles it is developing for military use, as does Pakistan. Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said Sunday that India had informed Pakistan ahead of time about the test, as is standard between the nuclear rivals.

On Saturday, district authorities in Chandipur evacuated around 2,750 villagers living near the missile testing range to two large shelters about a mile away, PTI said.

Russia to help India test supersonic cruise missile

24/01/2007 11:45 NEW DELHI, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Sukhoi Design Bureau will assist India in testing an air-to-ground version of the Brahmos cruise missile, a RIA Novosti correspondent said Wednesday.

Russia and India established in 1998 a joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace, to design, develop, produce and market a supersonic cruise missile. Sea-based and land-based versions of the missile have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.

The company is currently working on the development of an airborne version of the missile, which could be installed on the Sukhoi-30MKI air-superiority fighters of the Indian Air Force.

The Brahmos missile, named after India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moscow River, has a range of 180 miles and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 660 pounds. It can hit ground targets flying at an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and at a speed of Mach 2.8.

A BrahMos Aerospace official said last year that the company planned to make 1,000 missiles over the next 10 years and sell half of them to third countries.

During the sixth meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation in the Indian capital on Wednesday, the sides agreed to increase the production capacity of the joint enterprise in order to satisfy the growing demand for this type of weaponry.

In 2000, Russia and India signed a 10-year program on military-technical cooperation, which currently lists about 130 R&D and production projects.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, who is a co-chairman of the joint commission, Wednesday called for the development of a draft cooperation program beyond 2010.

"Joint projects in the sphere of military-technical cooperation between Russia and India show a gradual transition from 'seller-buyer' relations to scientific-production cooperation," said Ivanov, who is also Russia's deputy prime minister.

Over 1,000 BrahMos cruise missiles will be delivered to the three services of the Indian armed forces and also to some other countries within the next few years, a top official of Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia, which has developed the missile in partnership with India’s DRDO, said on Monday, Feb. 5.

“Money has already been paid to us for several hundred missiles, built in accordance with some previously concluded contracts,” Gerbert Yefremov, Director-General and Chief Designer of the Moscow-based company was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass.

“The high standard of our weapons has already won contracts for three frigates, which Russia will build for India. Their cost tops all the potentially possible profits from the sale of missiles. These orders, adding up to many billions, were won thanks to our joint work with India and thanks to BrahMos deliveries. The situation will apparently shape up in the same way with submarines in the near future,” Yefremov noted.

“Our joint work is yielding splendid results. One thousand or even two thousand missiles may seem to be an overwhelming number, but it is necessary to bear in mind that approximately 12,000 missiles of previous generations will have to be replaced all over the world within the next fifteen years,” Yefremov said in a statement on the results of the company’s work in 2006.

Work on the BrahMos venture, with the participation of Russian and Indian plants, began in mid-1999.

The first launch of such a missile from a coastal site was successfully carried out on June 12, 2001.
