Are Plantains popular in the Philippines. Ask because never hear anyone from PHI. mentioning them. They are very popular here. Also, in the other neighboring islands. How do you like them. Green or ripe. Boiled or Fried.

^^Never ate them with sugar and bbq. Green Plantain usually cut up into slices and fried. Then you squash the slice and salt them if you want. Some add garlic. Best when made into plantain chips but need to cut them real thin.
Ripe plantain best boiled whole or sliced and fried (don't need to squash). If you do it when they are really ripe they taste really sweet.
In US know plantains can be found easily where you have caribbean Hispanics or other ppl. from caribbean area. Mexicans, which make up 85% of US Hispanics, are not known to be famous for eating Plantains.

^ Must fry them in very hot oil and separate them when you put them in the frying pan. If you put them one on top of the other they might not cook right so will come out bland and not crispy. Minature bananas are usually more expensive. There is one called "Niņos". Another better tasting minature banana called ""Manzanos".

nope, it's not popular in the philippines and i don't think we grow them here...what we have is "saging na saba"...unless of course if "saging na saba" and plantain are one and the same........anyway, we boil it, fry it with sugar, barbeque it, and make chips out of it....

here is a pic of it and some ideas on how to cook it - - - http://www.pinoyfoodtalk.net/index.php/sit...a_saba_bananas/

Plantains and bananas are native to tropical Asia and New Guinea, not the Carribean or Central America.

My grandmother is Ilocano and she boils ripe saba bananas in their skins and then eats them plain. My grandfather is Ilonggo and he cooks them in coconut milk and sugar.
Hi Tone
Growing up, my sisters use to cook plaintains

^^ There is some research that says the Plantain could also be native to the Americas.

^^ I bet if it was there in Pre-colonial times, it was introduced by the Polynesians along with taro and the Asiatic chicken. The way to know for sure would be to do a comparative DNA anaylsis.

plantains or bananas is one of the most common and popular fruit in the country. we eat all types of bananas. about 4-5 types and some are even hybrid. the sweetest i know is senyorita (small but sweet). we have yellow, red and green. we have those that are ready to eat. and there are those that needs to be cooked because it doesnt taste nice when eaten raw. there are different type, one is called sab-a and another escalante. they look the same but one is smaller than the other. the most popular of these banana product is called "banana-cue". bananas cooked in oil and sugar. sometimes they made it into a turon by wrapping it with a lumpia wrapper. sometimes they form it into fan and dip it into a mixture of cornstarch and water to make it sticky and then fry it, when cooked it becomes crispy. sometimes they also make it into banana chips. sliced it thinly and fry it in oil that is mixed with sugar. but it can also be boiled or cooked in oil without sugar. and one of my favorite, it is also a popular ingredients for ginat-an.

yes it says maharlika. good job! ur so smart. there is a "bar" as u said in the letter R. it is found in bikol typeface. but anywayz, if u will examine. this baybayin is not suppose to be written only as the spanish friars wrote it. u can interpret the syallabry as you like since u own it. it is our pre-colonial writting. and we should let the style evolve. that is how writing script is done in southeast asia. with continued use, the script can be "more styilized" you know?
