The Philippines is kinda neglecting its military nowadays, which I think is very dangerous.
Every country needs to have a powerful armed forces to defend itself from hostile activities coming from the inside and outside of the country.

So if you were given the authority by the president and by the people of the Philippines to build up and modernize the military, what are the weaponry, equipment, or anything that's has something to do with the defense and security of the nation would you build and acquire? Assuming that the Philippines have unlimited funds committed to the military. icon_wink.gif

Here are some of the things I have in mind.

COMBAT SYSTEM

The weapon control system is the ISUS 90-1 TCS supplied by STN Atlas Elektronik, which provides automatic sensor management, fire and weapon control, navigation and operation.

WEAPONS

The submarine has the capacity to carry up to 16 surface-to-surface missiles or torpedoes. The surface-to-surface missile is the submarine-launched Harpoon, which delivers a 227kg warhead to a range of 130km at high subsonic speed.

The submarine has ten bow torpedo tubes. Four of the tubes have a 650mm diameter which could provide the capability of launching swimmer delivery vehicles (SDVs). With liners the tubes could be used for torpedoes. Six tubes of 533mm diameter for launching DM2A3 torpedoes were supplied by Atlas Elektronik. The torpedoes use wire-guided active homing to deliver a 260kg warhead at a maximum speed of 35 knots to a target range of over 13km. Using passive homing and speed of 22 knots, the torpedo has a range up to 28km.

The submarine can also be armed with mines. A wet and dry compartment is installed for deploying underwater swimmers.

COUNTERMEASURES

The submarines' radar warning receiver is the 4CH(V)2 Timnex electronic support measures system developed by Elbit in Haifa. The Timnex receives, identifies, displays and records the radar signal parameters. The system operates over 2 to 18GHz frequency bands and the processor operates at rates up to 1m pulses per second.

SENSORS

The Dolphin class submarines are equipped with an Elta surface search radar operating at I-band. The sonar suite includes the CSU 90 hull mounted passive and active search and attack radar supplied by Atlas Elektronik. The PRS-3 passive ranging sonar is also supplied by Atlas Elektronik. The flank array sonar providing passive search is the type FAS-3.

The submarine has two periscopes supplied by Kollmorgen.

PROPULSION

The submarine is powered by three 16V 396 SE 84 diesel engines developing 3.12MW sustained power and supplied by MTU (Motoren und Turbinen Union) Munchen GmbH, based in Munich. The submarine is equipped with three 750kW alternators, and a 2.85MW sustained power motor supplied by Siemens. The machinery drives a single shaft.

The propulsion system provides a speed of 20 knots dived and a snorting speed of 11 knots. The range of the submarine is 8,000 miles at a surface speed of eight knots and over 400 miles at an economical speed of 8 knots dived. The hull is rated for a diving depth of 350m. The endurance of the submarine is 30 days.

^^^ We need to multitask.

Eradicate the internal threats to our nation, while protecting our homeland. We can't rely on the United States forever. We must learn how to protect ourselves, although western weapons, equipment, and training from the US and EU would make us more effective in accomplishing our tasks. Gets mo? icon_neutral.gif
garouga
Reorganize the Philippine National Police into an internal security organization and give them military training and equipment, like China's PAP. Give them internal security duties alongside regular police and traffic duties. They should also serve as a counterbalance to the regular army in case the latter tries to stage a coup.

I don't know, just throwing it in right there.

Even if we did have the money, would They actually sell those weapons to us? I know that United States does not want to sell the Apache Attack helicopter because of its effectiveness, they don't want anyone else to have it, same goes for there Abram tanks. If we could the Abram would be tight to have with the gulf war and the current war like 1 person has died. We should modernise our Air force, it seems thats how war are fought now. Just like US we will be able to bomb anyone who messes with us then return home to defend.

The Philippines is a major non-NATO ally of the United States, so I don't see any reason why the US and EU would restrict the sale of arms to us. Israel is able to buy Apache helicopters and I believe Singapore does too, so why can't we? I think the only weapons in the US arsenal that they would restrict sales to other allied countries are the F-117A Nighthawk, F-22 Raptor and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, aircraft carriers and modern nuclear submarines, because that gives the US the edge over any other countries in the world.

the leopard is just way too damn heavy and unpractical for our existing infrastructure. logistics would be a nightmare.

what we need are light and fast tanks that can go in and out of the battlefield with speed. such as, the LAV series of vehicles by the US.

the apache on the other hand, is a pretty decent flying fortress, however, the fight for iraq has proven that this well built machine isn't really that effective for counter insurgency operations. It is vulnerable to infantry in certain environments.

the mh-60L or the armed version of the blackhawk would more suitable in my not so humble opinion.

In addition to the U.S., Greece, and Singapore, countries which use the Apache include Japan, Egypt, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Israel, South Korea, Bahrain, and Jordan. (As of 2006, the latter three countries do not own any Apache helicopters.)

The United Kingdom is using 67 Westland WAH-64 Apaches which will operate alongside amphibious forces as necessary and have a folding blade assembly for carrier operations. Taiwan and Pakistan have also considered procuring the AH-64D.

Philippines needs to copy Chiles military. They are the strongest military in the region of South America. They are very autonomous from the Central gov't.. The Chilean military is mainly funded by a 10% tax on all copper sales. This way gov't. cut-backs cannot affect them. Read this:
QUOTE
A Very One-Sided Arms Race As Seen From Peru
For the past years, Chile has been embarking on what Peru’s media has come to declare as a unilateral arms race that could destabilize the region. While Santiago continually declares that this process is simply an upgrade of obsolete weaponry in its armed forces’ inventory, Lima seems to think otherwise. Indeed, Chile appears to have gone well beyond a simple upgrade of its weaponry. On September 12, the Peruvian Navy newspaper Correo published an article that explained in detail the military equipment Chile has purchased broad in recent years. It has bought ten F-16 fighter planes from Lockheed Martin, a deal in large part brokered by then Lockheed lobbyist Otto Reich, who was so ill-thought of in Congress that the hard right ideologue could not get Senate confirmation to be Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs in the Bush administration. Chile also purchased two Scorpene-type submarines from Spain (for $500 million) In addition, Chile has bought four frigates type M from Holland, at a cost of $300 million, as well as four frigates type 22 and 23 from England (for $400 million). Perhaps more worrisome is Chile’s acquisition of 100 Leopard II tanks, made in Holland, in addition to the 300 Leopard I tanks they already possess which have night vision and are equipped with mounted British 105mm cannons.

Last December, CEPAL, the International Monetary Fund and the IISS of London issued a joint report that found that Chile leads the per capita defense expenditures in all of Latin America, at $90.08 per inhabitant. The 2004-2005 Military Balance of the IISS London found that in 2001, 2002 and 2003, Chile had the highest defense expenditure budget per capita of any nation in South America.

Part of the reason why the Chilean military appears to always get what it wants is that it has a relatively very large budget, which it obtains partly because of Chile’s copper exports (the armed forces is mandated to receive 10% of the total of all copper exports, a provision in effect since the late 1950’s and which remained so during the Eduardo Frei Sr. and Salvador Allende administrations until the present time). However, the autonomy of Chile’s military should not be overestimated. In an exclusive interview with COHA, former Peruvian minister of the interior, Fernando Rospigliosi explained that the Chilean armed forces continue to have more power and autonomy than any other military in Latin America.

Got above from following: http://www.coha.org/2005/09/15/the-peru-ch...bitter-history/

Philippines could use this form to build there military. They should tax all mineral sales by 10%. However, should watch out that you put responsible military in controlling the money or corruption can happen. They also need to combat poverty by making roads to rural isolated towns, housing, creating jobs, piped water, electricity and more services. If they do that support for the ppl. fighting in the Philippines will dry up. Should also invite them to start political parties if they will stop fighting.
This has been done in Colombia. However, Colombia has not done too good in combating poverty, When they are able to do that then maybe something will be done in the over 50 yrs. war they have been having.

For engaging the insurgents based in the deep jungles, these choppers would drop them like flies. I believe we already have 'em in our arsenal already. But for defense against external threats, nothing beats the Apache as our main attack helicopter.

what we need are more helicopters like the Hue or a better type like black hawk. we need them so that we can lift soldiers to hotspots as fast as possible. that little bird is just an augmentation, helicopters are very useful for our troops to taxi them elsewhere in the dense jungles.

I HAVE ANOTHER IDEA!

Given that the Philippines have unlimited funds committed to the military:

HITECH WEAPONS AND GADGETS

Then this high tech bird would be perfect in addition to our Hueys and Little Birds.
This is a highly modified version of the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.

Question para sa mga Soldados, What is the most effective firearm for jungle fighting? I know theres a lot of hand to hand (bolos) skirmishers, sowhat would be an affective but light weapon that a soldier would carry along with his knives?
