I found a topic like this in Chinese and Korean chats and I'm just asking out of curiosity. I'm a native speaker so I don't know how does it sound to a foreign ear.

gibberish..... it just sounds like a bunch of syllables put together.... and just fast screeching sounds....

The Filipino language is pleasant to the ears. It is not monotonous and doesn't have exagerrated pronunciation like the 'TWANG' in English. I find it just as easy to the ears as Bahasa Indonesia.

I'm not exactly a foreign ear, Am I? biggrin.gif

monocllabicgurl, are you a foreigner and not familiar with the language?
I thought you're Filipina. confused.gif

tagalog sounds soft to me, at least compared to bisaya
RL33
Personally it sounds like thier singing...not the manila dialect but the pure tagalog kind.
sbeechan
Tagalog sounds like it's made of one syllable words with abrupt endings to my ears.
everfree1604
Hmm, I like the Filipino language. like Torete ako sayo, it does seem excited but then sometimes, it feels chilled out and "easy to get along with". It's definetely better "sounding" than the chinese/mandarin language though, not that I'm pointing fingers.
dalawapo
tegalot can sound the most beautiful in the world, but u know if it has no prestige at all it will just be stagenating. i mean if the words dont have a background or benefits besides "impressing filipine co-worker" thats interst then not outsider will like to learn it. and so i sincerely belive filipines should make a decree to officalize malay!!!!! biggrin.gif

education
Its not that Kristleh. But the statement could have been made without comparing it to any other language. You tell me how does a topic title that asks you how does tagalog sound to you somehow drag the chinese language into this??? And your damn right Im defensive and I fail to believe you wouldnt be to if somebody made a negative statement regarding your own language. This has nothing to do with me being defensive its about pointing out that the comment he made was inappropriate? If Im defensive then its probably because your just a passive person so who are you to call anyone anything? Lets be realistic here for a second if that statement was made in person by somebody suggesting that there language somehow sounds better then yours dont you think you would be quote on quote defensive? Do you not think that people are not going to react to it? This isnt some fantasy world we live in you know.

It's called "having an opinion" -- And guess what, I CAN compare -- It's my opinion. This isn't some fantasy world as you said.
education
Fair enough, except next time be smart enough to say what you said without including any language in there for negative comparison or otherwise dont be surprised when people confront you on your statements. I fail to believe you wouldnt react if I made negative comparisons to your language in a topic that was totally irrelevant to tagalog. Get what Im saying? If I was discussing about cantonese or mandarin and I suddenly out of nowhere decide to indirectly talk negatively about tagalog wouldnt you find that strange too and totally irrelevant to the topic. What winds up happening when you do that is you wind up targeting one specific language therefore in your statement whether you were even aware of it or not though I seriously doubt it you singled chinese out as your comparison?????? Im sorry but your logic is as messed up as your so called opinion!

Ofcourse I "get what you're saying" but maybe next time, you yourself should be "smart enough" to get that this thread is entirely based on opinions and shouldn't be taken so seriously. This is the internet.
education
Let me ask you a question in real life would you or would you not say this in a classroom setting or in any type of a business setting? And even in a controlled environment be it the workplace or school isnt there certain things you just dont say? Its not because your not allowed to voice your opinions but there is a profound difference between voicing an opinion that doesnt offend others and voicing an opinion that gets your point across you seem to have a hard time understanding that. Im speaking on behalf of myself now and no one else but I know for a fact I would not say what you just said in public or even on the internet for any type of reason even if I could have somehow justify to people that it was just my opinion and I have that right it would still come off as an ignorant opinion not a constructive one. I guess according to your frame of logic then it was completely ok for Michael Richards to say the racist things he said to the people at that club that night because like you said after all its just our opinions right? He is entitled to compare right? I wonder how many people in real life would actually agree with you?

honestly i din't see the point in voicing your opinion if you can't handle people voicing their opinions about your opinion. icon_rolleyes.gif

anyways i grew up hearing tagalog so i can't give an unbiased opinion. it does sound slower than other filipino languages... to me at least... it sounds more OA lol.

Thats because what you two fail to understand is thats not an opinion its an insult! Am I the only one here that sees that or maybe Im just looking at this from the wrong point of view?

PLUS u know filipino languages and polynesian language is lingustic relations with many same root words. it just seems polynesian drop consanant clusters and the final consanant but filipino retain the ancestral root words more. like for examples:

chicken/bird:
filipino - manok
(hawaiian) polynesian languages - manu

http://language.psy.auckland.ac.nz/austron...n/word.php?v=97

or

sky

filipino - langit
(hawaiian) polynesian languages - lani

http://language.psy.auckland.ac.nz/austron...d&query=sky

so its not much that ur making funs of urself polynesian guy, u just droping the consanants - biggrin.gif

The wierd thing is the tagalog that most non tagalogs hear is being spoken by non tagalogs. For most filipinos its thier second language and are not native speakers , thus people like me speak it with ugly accent lol.

Makita ka, mayakap at muli pang mahagkan
